Standing With Communities Sanyukt’s Flood Relief Efforts Across Odisha

When floods affect communities, the impact goes far beyond water entering homes. Roads become inaccessible, daily livelihoods are disrupted, essential supplies become difficult to access, and families are often left facing uncertainty.

During the 2026 floods in Odisha, the Sanyukt Organisation team stepped forward to support affected communities across Jajpur, Balasore, Kendrapada and Bhadrak. Our focus was simple: reach people who needed immediate support and stand with communities during a difficult time.

Three Days on the Ground

Our team spent three days working on the ground, travelling through affected areas and reaching multiple villages. In several locations, reaching communities itself was a challenge due to flooded roads, waterlogged areas and limited accessibility.

In Jajpur, our team visited several affected villages and distributed essential relief materials to families who were facing difficulties accessing everyday necessities. The work involved travelling through challenging conditions and reaching communities in areas that were difficult to access.

The relief effort also extended to affected communities in Balasore, Kendrapada and Bhadrak, where essential dry-ration and other relief materials were arranged and distributed according to the needs of the communities.

More Than Relief Materials

Flood relief is not only about distributing supplies. It is also about listening to people, understanding what they are experiencing and ensuring that assistance reaches those who need it.

Our volunteers interacted with families, understood their immediate concerns and worked together to make the distribution process as accessible and organised as possible.

Relief materials included essential items such as biscuits, chuda, puffed rice, mixture, drinking water, sugar, candles, mosquito coils and sanitary pads, along with dry-ration support for affected families.

In some areas, families were staying in temporary shelters or tents after being displaced by the flood situation. These experiences reminded our team that even basic necessities can become extremely important during a disaster.

The Challenges Behind the Work

Working in flood-affected areas was physically and logistically challenging. Travelling through waterlogged roads, reaching remote villages and carrying supplies required continuous coordination among volunteers.

At times, the route itself became uncertain. But the commitment of the team remained focused on reaching the communities.

For Sanyukt, these challenges were also a reminder that disaster response requires more than resources. It requires teamwork, patience, local understanding and the willingness to be present on the ground.

Standing Together

The flood relief effort across Jajpur, Balasore, Kendrapada and Bhadrak was made possible through the collective efforts of volunteers, supporters and members of the Sanyukt community.

Every distribution, every conversation with an affected family and every journey into a difficult-to-reach area contributed to a larger purpose: reminding communities that they are not alone during a crisis.

As a youth-led organisation, Sanyukt believes that young people can play an important role in responding to emergencies and supporting communities when help is needed most.

The experience of the 2026 floods will remain an important chapter in our journey—not simply because of the relief materials distributed, but because of the people we met, the stories we heard and the lessons we carried back with us.

In times of crisis, standing together is the first step towards rebuilding.
